Identification of Boer Meat Goats

The Boer goat is a world-famous breed of meat goat that was cultivated in South Africa in the early 20th century. And distributed in Australia, New Zealand, the United States, Canada, the Netherlands, Germany, Tanzania, Kenya, Sri Lanka and other countries, China introduced in March 1995 from Germany, rearing in the suburbs of Xianyang, Shaanxi and bleaching water County, Jiangsu Province.

The Boer goat's body appearance is: It has an excellent meat type, and its body is strong and robust, wide and plump, and rectangular. The head is stout, the ears are large and long, the eyes are large and soft, the forehead is obviously raised and connected with the curvature of the sloping rounded corners. The male and female goats have horns. The male goat has a wide horn and bends outward. The female goat has a small horn and stands upright. The neck is thick, the back is wide and straight, the hindquarters are well developed, the muscles are full, and the limbs are short. The body was white hair, brown head and ears, a white hair band in the frontal midline to the nose, skin was loose and wrinkled, and the rams were more creased. In adult weight, the male goat averages 84.5 kg in South Africa, with a maximum of 90 kg; 145 kg in New Zealand; 105-135 kg in Canada; and 95-110 kg in Shaanxi, China. The average female goat in South Africa is 75.5 kg, with a maximum of 80 kg; 90 kg in New Zealand; 90-100 kg in Canada; and 65-70 kg in Shaanxi, China.

The performance of Boer goats mainly produces goat meat, which is characterized by large body size, good meat type, high meat production performance, tender and delicious meat, high reproduction rate, multiple births and many lambs, and strong adaptability. According to South Africa’s measurement, the average lamb’s birth weight is 4.15 kg, 100-day-weaned to 270-day-old, with an average daily weight gain of 200 g. The slaughter rate is 56.2%, body fat accounts for 18.31%, and the ratio of bone to flesh is 1:4.71. The net meat rate was 48%, of which lean meat accounted for 68%.

Boer goats are sexually mature at 6 months and rams at 168 days of age can be mated. The lambs are born twice a year or two times in two years. The average lambing rate is 207.8%, the monopoly rate is 7%, the double lamb rate is 65%, the triple lamb rate is 26%, the four lamb rate is 2%, and the lambs survive. The rate is more than 90%, the fertility period is about 10 years, the ewes have strong maternal properties, and the lactation performance is good.
