Thailand's cotton imports fell sharply in November

Affected by the decline in textile production and the impact of floods, Thailand’s cotton imports in November decreased again. According to the latest data from Thai Customs, Thailand imported 20,300 tons of cotton in November, a decrease of 42.5% year-on-year, the largest reduction in the past three years. In the same month, imports of only Australian cotton increased, while imports of US cotton, Tanzanian cotton and Brazilian cotton decreased by 72.6%, 84.0% and 55.1%, respectively, year-on-year. At present, the raging floods in Thailand have just begun to recede, and the decline in Thai textile production has reached the fastest level since the Asian financial crisis.

At present, the US Department of Agriculture expects Thailand's cotton imports in 2011/12 to be 354,000 tons, down 7.2% year-on-year. In the first four months of this year, Thailand imported a total of 76,200 tons of cotton, which is only USDA's forecast of 21.6%, a year-on-year decrease of 40.6. %, the sum of the imports of Australian cotton, Brazilian cotton and American cotton decreased by 41.7% year-on-year, while the imports of other varieties also decreased by 38.7%.
