Japanese study found that mulberry leaves contain deadly toxins or new pesticides

Japanese researchers have found that although mulberry leaves are the food of the silkworm, a toxic ingredient contained therein may have a lethal effect on larvae of other moths. According to a report in the online edition of the "Journal of the National Academy of Sciences," the United States, researchers at the Japan Institute of Agricultural Biological Resources found that after several days of feeding Mulberry leaves to other moth larvae like feeding silkworms, these larvae all died. If the mulberry leaves are cut thin, the liquid flowing out from the veins is washed and then these larvae are fed, and they can grow healthily. If food is mixed with 10% Mulberry juice, after 4 days, the weight of the larvae fed these foods is only 60% of the body weight of the larvae fed the general diet. The researchers believe that the liquid in the mulberry vein contains an alkaloid and other unknown macromolecules, which is the "culprit" of poisoning those larvae. Research shows that this alkaloid can impede the digestion and metabolism of sugar and can lower the blood sugar level. This finding may help to develop new pesticides for pest larvae. The researchers said that although the mulberry leaf was previously known to contain this substance, this study found that the concentration of toxic substances in the veins is 100 times the average concentration of the entire mulberry leaf.
