Gene-producing transgenic plants

German scientists said that they implanted a gene from the spider into plants such as potatoes and tobacco, successfully cultivating transgenic plants capable of producing silk proteins, and opened up new avenues for the mass production of silk proteins.
German scientists extracted genes that control the production of silk proteins from a spider and implanted them in the genomes of various plants. In the transgenic plants that were grown, the protein produced in the plants was more than 2%.
Spider silk has high strength, toughness and elasticity, and the performance of synthetic fibers is difficult to compare with, but the cost of collecting natural silk proteins is extremely high. In the past, silk fibroin was produced using the method of cultivating genetically modified bacteria and transgenic goats, but the cost of producing silk protein using transgenic plants may be lower.
It is not clear how spiders transform silk proteins into slender, firm spider silks. However, the cost-effective production of silk proteins will contribute to the development of this technology. If it is possible to develop a method for effectively spinning silk proteins, it is possible to produce a new type of high-strength, non-toxic, biodegradable bio-textile.
