US developed a new precision imaging system

Release date: 2008-09-01

American scientists have recently conducted animal tests on a newly developed imaging system. This imaging system allows cancer cells in the body to appear, improving the accuracy of the doctor's removal of cancer cells.
The research was carried out by researchers at the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston, USA, who said the technology would enable advanced breast cancer, prostate cancer, lung cancer and other cancers to be treated well and prevent doctors from removing healthy vital tissue. Such as blood vessels and nerves. The project leader, Dr. John Frangioni, said that the technology allows doctors to see the body tissues that are difficult to identify, so that image-guided surgery can be realized, and the distribution of cancer cells can be established to cure cancer patients. Important basis.
The portable system is called a fluorescence-assisted probe resection device and consists of a near-infrared fluorescence imaging system, a video monitor, and a computer. The system contains no moving parts and is replaced by a light-emitting diode instead of a laser, avoiding direct contact with the subject.
This unique system uses a special chemical dye called a near-infrared fluorophore that allows the body to localize specific tissue such as cancer cells after injection. When the patient is in near-infrared light, the dye or contrast agent will "light up" the cancerous cells and display them on a video monitor. These "lighting" cancer cells will be layered over normal visible light images, allowing doctors to clearly distinguish cancer cells even when they are full of blood and other anatomical structures.
They will conduct human clinical trials this summer to locate lymph nodes in breast cancer patients for the first time and further expand the range of applications for this technology within five years. Dr. Frangioni also said that in the future, fluorophores can mark nerves and blood vessels as different colors from cancer cells, allowing doctors to easily observe multiple body tissues at the same time.
